About Me

As a teacher, I began teaching at the age of 14 as a neighborhood piano teacher in Chicago (that makes 21 years of teaching experience, for those keeping track!). To read more about my performing and composing career, please visit shiancostello.com/about.

Throughout my teaching career, I've gained valuable pedagogical skills in a myriad of contexts, covering the near full spectrum of age and ability in music education, which deeply informs the way I teach:
-
Early Childhood: designed curriculum and led group classes for ages 10 mos. to 3 years.
-
Middle School: private school classroom music teacher; Saturday school music theory classroom teacher.
-
Pre-College: guest teacher and instructor at Merit School of Music, ChiME; past Faculty Member at Interlochen Arts, New Music School, Centre d'Art de Préville, etc.
-
Collegiate and Post-Graduate: visiting artist at Boston Conservatory 2013-14; guest artist at several other orchestras, universities and institutions across North America (see professional bio for full list)
In addition to the act of teaching itself, I've furthered and continue to further my pedagogical training:
-
Piano Pedagogy directed study with Dr. Bette Coulson
-
Dalcroze Eurythmics workshops
-
Classroom teaching experience in Music Theory, Ear Training, Music History for Danish Scholars at Chicago Jazz Philharmonic
